Experts from six organisations taking part in the European SUITS project met on 24 October in Valencia to promote the application of smart, sustainable and integrated transport systems in the cities of Valencia and Kalamaria (Greece), and in the West Midlands region of the United Kingdom.

The six members of SUITS taking part in the conference entitled "Building small-medium Local Authorities' capacity to implement emerging transport technologies", included representatives from the Las Naves innovation centre and the Packaging, Transport and Logistics Research Center (Spain); from the University of Coventry, the SUITS project coordinator; from Transport for West Midlands (both from the United Kingdom), and from the City Council of Kalamaria and from the company Lever (Greece).

Also in attendance were experts from partner organisations in the project, including the Valencia City Council, the Valencia City Bicycle Agency, the La Pinada neighbourhood initiative and Pioneers into Practice (European Union Climate-KIC programme).

A number of cross-cutting topics were discussed at the conference such as the value of transport technologies for small and medium-sized cities, the identification of players and stakeholders, funding sources and the tools and guidelines available.

The first part of the conference reviewed progress in the ongoing process of organisational change aimed at improving the capacity of local authorities. A series of activities were then presented to support authorities in applying innovative transport technologies, such as data collection tools that involve the cooperation of the general public.

The day closed with a session on innovative aspects of funding, tendering and business models, and with a hands-on workshop on emerging technologies.

The SUITS project: Supporting Urban Integrated Transport Systems: Transferable tools for authorities (2017-2021) is funded by the European Commission under the H2020 call. The project aims to design new procedures to help improve the efficiency of urban mobility plans, as well as to exchange synergies between participating European cities which, in addition to the West Midlands region, Kalamaria and Valencia, include Stuttgart (Germany), Rome and Turin (Italy), Palanga (Lithuania), and Alba Iulia (Romania).

SUITS aims to increase the knowledge and capacities of local authorities to develop and implement policies for smart, sustainable, inclusive, integrated and accessible transport systems for all citizens.
