Environmental impact of transport of paper for recycling to China

The shortage of raw materials make waste a great opportunity. Transport contributes significantly to the environmental impact of recycling. Hence it is encouraging local recycling plant to prevent overloads from transport.
Source of funds:
Regional
Scopes: Waste, energy and water
Lines research: Sustainability

These aspects are reflected in the latest Waste Directive (Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and Council), recently transposed into national law by Law 22/2011, of July 28 waste and contaminated soil in which in Article 16.3 states that "government can articulate a temporary basis to prioritize recycling mechanisms within the European Union, where justified for environmental reasons."

However, until now there were not enough in-depth studies analizasen environmental impact posed by waste transport operations to distant countries. This paper has addressed on a case, such an analysis.

OBJECTIVE

The study analyzes in depth the environmental impact posed by waste transport operations to distant countries, specifically China.

We analyzed the steps of:

  • Shipping from the port of origin in Spain to the port of destination in China.
  • Road freight from the port of destination in China to China's paper industry.

RESULTS
Here you can see some of the results of the study, which you can download the Executive Summary or Full Study:

The transport of paper for recycling from Spain to China conducted in 2010 has meant the equivalent of CO2-eq emissions generated by:

  • The lighting of 190,000 homes for a year.
  • The lighting of a city like Valencia for more than 3 years
  • The energy consumption of more than one million computers
  • The CO2-eq emissions generated in transporting a shipment of 25 tons of common recyclable paper (1 container) from Spain to China amount to 320 times to travel from Madrid to Barcelona by bus, or travel 10 times by air from Madrid London.
