Extending the shelf life of poultry products is a major concern for the industry. This shelf life is based on different parameters like storage temperature, the degree of initial carcass contamination, and in the case of packaged products, permeability of films and headspace  volume among other relevant parameters.

Unfortunately, biodegradable polymers are usually more expensive than existing polymers such as PET, and their properties are not comparable to commercial materials. Therefore these materials have only a small percentage of the market where consumers are prepared to pay a higher price; thus, biodegradable packaging for poultry is not as exploited as it could be.

BENEFITS
ECONOMICAL: The SMEs will open new markets and they will be able to provide sustainable solutions that will be more affordable than the existing biodegradable concepts today. They will be able to commercialise a new fully renewable packaging solution for poultry products

ENVIRONMENTAL: Use of reneawable and more sustainable sources, demonstration of materials applicability in specific biodegradable packaging.

SOCIAL: Promotion of environmental friendly buying beh aviours, consumers’ satisfaction and contribution to rural development due to the increased demand of hemp and flax derived materials.
