INTEGRATED PROCESS FOR A SUSTAINABLE AND COST EFFECTIVE FOOD WASTE TREATMENT

FOODWASTETREATMENT

The project aims to reduce the amount of food waste being sent to landfil -currently set at 52 million tonnes per year for the EU- through a controlled managment of packed and unpacked food waste.

Introduction

All through the European Union (EU), problems related to food waste are increasing year by year, with all associated environmental and economic impacts. According to EUROSTAT data, food waste from manufacturing, food services and catering, and retail and wholesale sectors represents a 58% of all food waste generated in the EU, amount responsible for 99 million tons of CO2 emissions annually – the equivalent of almost 2% of the total EU emissions in 2008. Together, with increases in both population and disposable income, food waste generation is expected to climb to 126 million tons per year by 2020 if no actions are taken.

Objetives

The main aim of the project is to promote and drive an innovative concept that will enable a sustainable management for packed and unpacked food waste. For reaching such ambitious goal, the project involves the definition of new strategies for the optimization of the procedures for achieving an efficient collection and reception of food waste, the demonstration of an innovative de-packaging and post-treatment technology able to perfectly separate organic and inorganic fractions of packed food waste, and the evaluation of further valuable uses of separated fractions.

Expected results

The project will stablish a way of reducing the actual amount of food waste being sent to landfill, amount currently set at 52 million tonnes per year for the EU.

Some expected results directly related to the implementation of the project are:

- Improvements in food waste management by promoting and setting in motion new strategies for the optimization of the procedures of collection and reception of food waste to be implemented at waste generation points.

-  Optimization, demonstration and promotion of an innovative technology for processing packed and unpacked food waste, able to treat up to 2 ton/h.

- Reductions in CO2 emissions compared with landfill disposal.

- Saving for waste cost management compared with landfill disposal.

- Obtain clean organic and inorganic separated fractions making them suitable for a wide range of recycling or valorizing processes.
