NanoMONITOR
Support to the risk assessment of nanomaterials under REACH by developing a real-time information and monitoring system

LIFE NANOMONITOR

The overall objective of the NanoMonitor project is to improve the use of environmental monitoring data to support the implementation of the REACH regulation and to promote the protection of human health and the environment when dealing with engineered nanomaterials .

Period of implementation

2016 - November 2018

Summary and objectives

The project had three key objectives:

  • to develop stand operating procedures to collect and analyse ENMs in complex industrial, urban und natural environments

  • to develop of an on-line information system consisting of two integrating elements; a software application to capture, store, exchange and manage the data on the concentration of engineered nanomaterials, and a new low cost monitoring station prototype to support the the outdoor and indoor monitoring of airborne nano-pollutants.

  • Support the monitoring of REACH compliance and its impact on risk mitigation and prevention

Results

The main results and outcomes of the projects are:

-The development of a data base about the concentration of nanomaterials in different environments including urban environments, industrial environments, and what we call clean environments, rural areas.

-The development of five prototype stations for the characterisation and detection of nanoparticles in all environments that are relevant for human health.

-A data base describing concentrations to meet the obligations of REACH, with the goal of characterising the maximum environmental concentrations of nanoparticles.

Project results were disseminated to a large community of SMEs, stakeholders and competent authorities at a regional, national and EU level. A structured compendium of free webinars, workshops and training will support the use of the NanoMonitor information and monitoring system for end-users and stakeholders.
